I was stumped for a topic and trying to procrastinate, when I saw Shiloh's TT and borrowed her idea (I didn't think she'd mind- our lists are quite different). 1) I broke my nose when I was four (earliest memory? I’m not sure). 2) My brother and I taking a walk when we were visiting my grandparents, getting lost and ending up halfway down the mountain (they’d told us not to cross the street but the road curved so much that to get back either would have been all the way up the road we’d come down or cross the street and cut the trip in half)- again I was four- he was eight (I was the one that knew we could get back by crossing the street). 3) In third grade, a girl in the safety patrols was struck by lightning and killed (somehow I don’t remember it from that year, but from hearing about it the next year), what I do remember was she was walking home in a storm and carrying a metal lunch box. 4) Breaking my arm when I was nine. 5) And again when I was ten (same arm. yes, I was a graceful child, wasn’t I?). 6) Reading the Hobbit at ten, and the Lord of the Rings not much long after (that summer in fact, if I remember correctly). 7) Taking a field trip in fourth grade (and again in fifth) to spend a week in the Florida Keys in a program called Sea Camp- where we did lots of swimming, studied plankton, and explored mangrove swamps. 8) Spending a month at the beach, with my arm in a cast (see #4). Not allowed to swim, but only wade in the shallows (I had learned to swim practically before I could walk). 9) Borrowing my sister’s romances: I remember reading Ashes in the Wind by Kathleen Woodiwiss and Devil’s Desire by Laurie McBain (in Middle School?). 10) Going to summer camp after 6th grade and coming face to face with my very first real live, up close (and very tall) horse. The hardest part was getting on the bloody thing when the stirrup was up roughly equal to my shoulder (I have short legs-which didn’t help). 11) Getting to visit a school friend who had moved away and spending a whole month with her and her family and then flying home (she lived in the country and had her own horse- I lived in south Florida and had a sea grape tree in our front yard). 12) My mother catching me reading my sister’s romances and just saying, “I can’t believe you’re reading those.” 13) Getting glasses in sixth grade, and suddenly realizing why I’d never been any good at softball or tennis (watch the ball? Yeah right). Links to other Thursday Thirteens! The purpose of the meme is to get to know everyone who participates a little bit better every Thursday. Visiting fellow Thirteeners is encouraged! Isn't it weird how those random memories stick with us? I have never heard of a sea grape tree I'm going to have to go look it up now. :-D Happy TT!
I have some very clear memories from when I was a kid. Some of which I wish I could forget. ;) Grat list!
Ah, my first exposure to romance novels: I'd bought two at a dime store with my allowance as a birthday present for a favorite babysitter. I think I was about 8 or 9. My mom found them and was absolutely horrified. She took them away from me and hid them in a high cupboard.
So of course I sneaked up there and read them, and had no idea why they were so horrifying. They were definitely not risque in the least, which disappointed me horribly. :)
It's funny what you remember from your childhood. Some are big stuff and other things are just quiet moments.
You have a good memory. I barely remember being 6. Guess it wasn't all that memorable.
I can hardly remember what I did yesterday, so I don't think I could come with 13 things to say about my childhood!!
Poor you, having your arm broke 2 times, and one during the summer!!
Wow, you had a propensity for breaking bones, didn't you? The month on the beach must have been torture! I was lucky to never break anything when I was young, but I was a little jealous of those who got their casts signed! That was cool! (But probably not worth it, LOL.)
Happy TT!
Christine- Thanks, I think we all have memories we'd like to forget. I don't write about mine.
Darla- my mom never forbid us to read anything, she did however question what we were reading, often in fact (she's not a fan of fantasy, so she even questioned Tolkien *g*).
N.J.- Thanks. Yup, the memory is a strange thing. Like Proust smelling the tea and suddenly remembering the madelines from his childhood.
Hi Gabriella- some things are crystal clear, and somethings are lost completely, and I'm always surprised by which is which.
Hi Jill- Actually both times were in the summer, the first time was the summer before 4th grade, the second at the end of 4th grade and into that summer (spent at the beach). At least it got me out of P.E.
Such rich, warm, wonderful childhood memories, Ann. I really enjoyed reading these. It's almost like taking a step back in time because it brings so many of my own memories to mind.
Great TT! :-)
Good TT I'll have to borrow that one next week.
Thanks, Daisy, glad you enjoyed it.
Hi Amy- Thanks, and go ahead, I borrowed it from Shiloh *g*.
yikes! okay, okay I'm here! jeez - caught me eyeing the pretties over at Lisa's again. In my defense it doesn't take any braincells to drool over them while i'm working.
The lightening strike was freaky but the visiting a friend for a whole month - that's way cool.
Great TT topic! Luckily (and amazingly) the only bones I ever broke as a kid were toes.
Happy TT and thanks for visiting my list! :-)
Hi Rhi- So how many times Did you go back and ogle the pretties? Yeah, I had a wonderful time that summer.
Hi L^2, glad you liked it. Actually I'm amazed that I've never broken a toe, considering how many times I've kicked furniture legs. Thanks for visiting.
Very interesting list. Enjoyed reading it! :)
Yeah, I'd like to know how many times Rhi was ogling the pretties, too... I'm guessing once a half-hour, OR whenever she was clear to reopen the window...
As for your list, Ann, it says a lot about you. Neat stuff. I am duly impressed with your sense of direction; it reminds me of #1, who gave his grandfather directions to our favorite Chinese restaurant... when he was 2.
My jaw dropped when I read of the girl who died. Were you traumatized for life?
ummm - me oogling? oh no - you have me confused with ANOTHER rhian.
Great on the memories, brings some of my own back. But I've got to say you're much more open than I think I'd be.
Susan, that's just freaky about your 2 year old.
Thanks Cora,
Hi Susan- I went back and left a message there just for Rhi *g*. I do have a pretty good sense of direction, it's my sense of distance that gets me into trouble *g*. And the few times I've gotten lost, I did it Big (it didn't help that the last time the person who gave me the directions neglected to mention an entire Highway in them- sigh).
Hi Scooper- Traumatized, no. I'm not even one of those people who freaks during thunderstorms (I grew up in South FL-lightning capital of the entire US- we had daily thunderstorms), but I am also not going to take stupid chances). Death is a part of life and I guess I always knew that.
Okay, Rhi, we believe you.
P.S. Did you get your message? *g*
Hi Lisa, Glad you liked it.
#3, wow.
I think getting that first pair of glasses and "oh, that's what the world is supposed to look like factor" is memorable for a lot of people. I got mine when I was 6. Everything seemed so much smaller without the halo of blur.
Came by to see if you posted a snippet and am commenting to your TT instead. If you post a snippet, let me know??
Interesting, great list to read!
Thanks for visiting my BED T13.
the seeds of some great stories are in some of our childhood memories.
when i was in grade school, a classmate's older sister age 12 was kidnapped on the way home and held hostage in the basement of a deserted house and...well she lived--physically. my first intimation there was a fate that might be worse than death. not the things that were done to her even, but her permanent full mental flight.
excellent list concept.
thanx for visiting mine
