Monday's Poetry Train

Okay, here is today's contribution to the poetry train, hope you enjoy it. I have to run some errands but I'll be back to check out everyone else's poems.

The First Day

I stood in the doorway,
Nervous excitement
Making me jittery,
Okay that might have been the extra large
Frappaccino I’d had getting ready.
Looking down, I worried about
My clothes, would they understand
This summer uniform?
I had my gear beside me,
Everything I’d need for today.
I’d stayed up late planning
what to bring with me, what to wear.
The clock chimed.
It was time.
Grabbing my paperback in one hand,
My iced tea held securely in the other,
I opened the screen door
Stepping out onto my deck.
Settling into my long (long) neglected
Beach chair, I sat back with a sigh.
Let the vacation begin.

I get it!
You're nekkid, right?

Actually no (sigh), just shorts and a tshirt, but not something I usually wear on Monday morning on my way to work.

Hiya! nice addition to the train today! I haven't tried to write poetry in years, and now for some reason it scars me.

Actually I was hoping I don't look like some touristy uberdork *g*. Seriously though, I was hoping to give the impression it was the first day at a new job or something, and then the reader would find out the truth.

And Y, don't let the poetry scare you, the audience here is very forgiving. And generous to praise things that they like.

Ahhhhh, yes ... summer ... beach. That's what I plan on doing today.

No beach, maybe later in the week though. Today I'm going to sit on the deck at my apartment. And I have to add, I went out on said deck to prepare for an afternoon of sitting and writing, took one look out the door and said to the cat, "Why is the ficus tree sitting in my chair?" I guess it got windy last night *g*.

I totally have school on the brain... I'm expecting this to be about the first day of school, not vacation.

Who, me? Excited about school? Nah.

Btw, I like the uniform line, too. Been there more times than I can count.

Ann said...

Glad you liked it. I can't wait for school to start either. And isn't a business suit just another uniform? Only not as comfortable?

Enjoy your vacation.

I can't wait for mine and really don't want to go anywhere. Except fo the beach around the corner that is...

Well you suckered me in Ann. And I liked it. ;)

yeah - she got me too. now i feel like running around yelling - Ann is nekkid on her blog!!! i have no idea how these rumors start.
it is funny how if you have to wear corporate monkey suit most of the time, dressing casual feels weird and awkward.

Ann said...

Thanks, Nancy, so far so good.

Thanks, Lisa and Rhian, glad you both liked it (no starting wild rumors now- I've got a dayjob to consider *g*). I must say, though, the corporate monkey suite still seems weird and awkward to me. I'm definitely a casual Friday kind of person.

My vacation is going really fast...Take a break, have a great book or laptop and enjoye the great warmness of the sun...That what vacation is all about!

Yes, you're twisty ending worked with me. I was trying to figure out what kind of a job is she applying for that they won't be put off by her summer wear?

Emily Veinglory said...

LOL. You're killing me here. new job and earning a whole one day off a month (e.g. I have none)

Ann said...

Thanks, Jill, glad you liked it. I'll try and enjoy the summer sun, but it's hard to do when the heat index tops 100 (bleh).

Thanks, Julia.

Sorry, Emily, I know how you feel (I've been with the dayjob for 7 years, that's why it accumulates nicely, that and I haven't had a chance to take any in 6 months).

this was fun. love the reversal of expectation at the end. hope your day of sun and story was as fun for you.

Ann said...

Thanks Joy, it was fun. It was a bit too windy on the deck to stay out there for long, and the heat index precludes going out in the afternoons, but it's been a relaxing two days.
