I was planning what will happen next in the story I’m writing to enter into Paperback Writers ebook challenge, and came up with a cool idea. One of the characters is going to give my main character a task; she has to create her own set of rune stones and her own deck of Tarot cards. But she can’t just go out and buy the stones she uses, she has to find them and they have to mean something to her, or remind her of a place or time in her life. When I thought of that, I remembered climbing a mountain in the Lake District in England and stopping next to a clear cold running stream, and picking up a rock. I carried that rock with me the rest of my stay in England, and still have it almost twenty years later. It’s not a good shape for a rune stone, it would be too easy to pick out of a pile, but something about it made me follow one of the folds on its surface, until it was marked with its own sign: kind of like a wonky “T” or maybe someone’s walking stick or shepherd’s crook. Not exactly a rune, but maybe a letter in the alphabet for the language I’m creating for my other book.
I also like having her create her own Tarot deck, having her make her own meanings and interpretations, that way she would have to study different sets of cards and understand their differences and their similarities. She has already shown that she is an artist, and this way the drawings themselves would have meaning for her. Somehow what she learns while working on the rune stones and the Tarot cards would help her understand herself and help her solve the mystery/defeat the bad guys. Somehow, I’m still working out that part.
